Walking the halls of the UN, I felt its power — and its distance from the people it was built to serve | Satara Uthayakumaran

From the Tiwi Islands to Tasmania, from city classrooms to refugee programs, I have listened to thousands of young people. And now I carry those voices with me into the heart of the UN

In its 80th year, the UN headquarters in New York heard speeches that made headlines. One leader thundered threats of war. Another complained about an escalator. Meanwhile, outside the polished floors and gilded halls, children were starving in Palestine. Bombs fell. Borders closed. Budget cuts placed the very architecture of human rights under siege.

This was meant to be a landmark gathering, a celebration of 80 years of multilateralism. Instead, it felt like a reckoning. Can the UN still serve the people it was built to protect, or has its promise begun to crack under the weight of politics?

To avoid becoming a conflict manager, you might want to pick phrases to repeat like a broken record, writes advice columnist Eleanor Gordon-Smith. They might stop trying to involve you

My brother and sister are really angry at my parents. They say that we had a terrible childhood because my dad was absent a lot and my mum used to play us off against each other to keep control. There was a lot of arguing.

But this is just half the story. I know my parents loved us all a lot and tried to give us a good childhood. We always had home-cooked food and stories. Nowadays my parents are trying to make amends, but my brother and sister just don’t see it. They’re so critical and to be honest I think they’re a bit ungrateful. I feel caught in the middle. What can I do?

Non-stop snow, instant noodles and yaks: tales of being trapped on Everest

More than 1,000 people were stuck in mountain hiking areas for days, sparking extensive rescue efforts by local authorities and villagers

The weather wasn’t great. A bit drizzly and cold. But about 1,000 people steeled themselves on Mount Everest’s eastern flank to spend the national day long weekend trekking.

As he led the group along the path lined with stunning icy peaks, 32-year-old guide Shu Wei felt increasingly uneasy. He knew the weather on the mountains could be unpredictable and dangerous, but this snowfall was something else.

Ukraine war briefing: 23 children and adolescents brought out of Russian-occupied areas

Rescue carried out under the president’s ‘Bring Kids Back UA’ programme; power cut in capital and several injured - What we know on day 1,325

A major Russian attack on central Kyiv triggered a fire in a high-rise apartment building and targeted energy sites early on Friday, cutting power to parts of the capital, officials said. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said nine people had been injured, with five of them taken to hospital. He said power cuts and disruptions to the water supply had hit districts on the east bank of the Dnipro River that runs through the city. “The capital of the country is under an enemy ballistic missile attack and a massive attack by the enemy strike drones,” the Ukrainian air force said, urging Kyiv residents to remain in shelters.

Twenty-three Ukrainian children and adolescents have been brought out of Russian-occupied areas of the country to territory under Kyiv’s control, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff said on Thursday. Andriy Yermak, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said the rescue was carried out under the president’s “Bring Kids Back UA” programme aimed at bringing to safe areas children deported to Russia or confined to Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump said Thursday that Washington and Nato allies were “stepping up the pressure” to end the war in Ukraine, after his outreach to Russia’s Vladimir Putin failed to achieve a ceasefire. “Yeah, we are stepping up the pressure,” Trump said in an Oval Office during a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. “We’re stepping it up together. We’re all stepping it up. Nato has been great,” he added. Trump said his administration might impose more sanctions on Russia.

Russia accused Ukraine on Thursday of rupturing a now defunct pipeline used to transport Russian ammonia into Ukraine for export, releasing toxic gas into the air. The incident took place near the frontline village of Rusin Yar in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, Russia said.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog said on Thursday the process had started to restore external power to the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine, cut off from the electricity grid for more than two weeks. Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said the process had begun after consultation with authorities in Ukraine and Russia, who blame each other for the downing of the external lines.

Strikes on Russian oil facilities by Ukraine’s newly developed long-range missiles and drones are causing significant gas shortages in Russia, while on the battlefield a recent Ukrainian counteroffensive has derailed Russia’s plans to capture parts of the eastern Donetsk region, Zelenskyy said. Ukraine’s new Palianytsia missile has hit dozens of Russian military depots, he said. The Ruta missile drone, meanwhile, recently struck a Russian offshore oil platform more than 150 miles (250km) away in what Zelenskyy called “a major success” for the new weapon.

Zelenskyy floated the idea of nominating the US president, Donald Trump, for the Nobel peace prize in a briefing to reporters, ahead of the announcement of this year’s winner, who would have been selected earlier in the autumn. Zelenskyy said in comments released on Thursday: “If Trump gives the world – above all, the Ukrainian people – the chance for such a ceasefire, then yes, he should be nominated for the Nobel peace prize. We will nominate him on behalf of Ukraine.”

Zelenskyy accused Russia of wanting to sow “chaos” in Ukraine by launching strikes on his country’s energy grid and railway infrastructure, in comments published on Thursday. Moscow has in recent weeks escalated aerial attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities and rail systems.

The Ukrainian military said on Thursday that it had struck the Korobkovsky gas processing plant and oil transport infrastructure in Russia’s Volgograd region overnight. The Russian defence ministry said on Thursday that its forces had struck port facilities and energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s Odesa region that were used by the Ukrainian army.

Ukraine’s prime minister, the head of presidential office, and a senior sanctions adviser will go to the US early next week for talks with US officials, Zelenskyy said on Thursday. Zelenskyy wrote in a post on social media: Topics include air defence, energy, and sanctions steps, as well as the negotiation track. The issue of frozen assets will also be discussed with the US.

In Gaza, there was joy but much anxiety. Many expressed the fear that the new deal would collapse, bringing more suffering to the devastated territory. Though crowds gathered in some places to dance and sing, in many places witnesses reported muted reaction amid loud overflights by warplanes and drones.

Senate still deadlocked over shutdown as Trump reiterates threat to Democrats

Seventh round of votes fails to yield breakthrough while president threatens to cut funds for ‘Democrat programs’

The US Senate remained deadlocked on legislation to end the government shutdown on Thursday, as Donald Trump reiterated his threat to make Democrats pay for the funding lapse that has closed federal agencies and furloughed workers nationwide.

The Senate took its seventh round of votes on competing Democratic and Republican proposals to restart the funding, but neither won enough bipartisan support to clear the 60-vote threshold for advancement in the chamber. In a sign that neither party had budged from its demands, no senators changed their votes from when the bills were last considered in recent days.

Grisly recording reveals bat catching, killing and eating robin mid-flight

Before the Spanish study, some scientists had been sceptical about the mammals attacking migratory birds

Bats are generally viewed as harmless, if spooky, creatures of the night. But scientists have revealed a more savage side, after witnessing a greater noctule bat – Europe’s largest bat species – hunting, killing and devouring a robin mid-flight.

The grisly recording reveals the bat as a formidable predator, climbing to 1.2km (4,000ft) before embarking on a breakneck-speed dive in pursuit of its prey. On capture, the bat delivered a lethal bite and subsequent chewing sounds, recorded between echolocation calls, indicated that the bat consumed the bird continuously during flight for 23 minutes without losing altitude.

The Guardian view on Trump and the ceasefire deal: hope at last, but the real work is just beginning | Editorial

This is the best prospect of ending Israel’s war in Gaza since it began. But a long-term solution remains distant

Donald Trump called the pause in hostilities he has brokered the first step to a “strong, durable and everlasting peace”. No one can do more to determine the outcome than the US president. This was, for him, a modest statement, acknowledging that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of his plan – it being their decision, not his, to break a multi-point agreement into a multi-stage discussion. Two parties so far apart agreed on one thing: both would rather defer the really difficult issues.

In Israel and Gaza, there was joy – however tentative – at the announcement. An end to the annihilation, the release of all hostages and the resumption of large-scale aid have all been desperately needed. There is every reason to fear that this will not lead to a lasting peace, and every reason to strive to ensure that it does. In finally reining in Benjamin Netanyahu, and in offering Qatar a security guarantee that persuaded it (with Egypt and Turkey) to lean more heavily upon Hamas, Mr Trump has created an opportunity which must be seized.

Putin said on Thursday that the missiles fired by Russia to target a Ukrainian drone exploded near the Azerbaijan Airlines plane flying from Baku as it was preparing to land in Grozny, the regional capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya, on 25 December 2024. Ukrainian drones have regularly struck deep inside Russia.

Ratcliffe’s words will not save Amorim if he fails to remedy Manchester United’s flaws | Jamie Jackson

For all the co-owner’s promises of three-year spells, the head coach will not survive this season without real signs of a revival

The word from Manchester United insiders is that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s headline-hogging declaration that three years is an apt timescale to judge Ruben Amorim is merely Sir Jim being Sir Jim, the self-made billionaire showing his anti-PR, maverick streak.

While the debate rages on TV, radio, social media, and in drinking parlours about the sagacity of his words, what Ratclifffe did not say or allude to intrigues as much.

‘We rewatched an Ajax match’: What really happens when tennis anti-dopers call

Remembering where to be 365 days a year, even if it means the doping control officer pressing the doorbell at 6am, can weigh heavily on players

During a particularly mischievous period of his life, many years ago, a 21-year-old Gaël Monfils returned home from a long night of partying at 5.45am and after a quick dash to the bathroom fell asleep. Minutes later he was woken up by a doping control officer at his front door: “I’m dying in my bed and somehow I hear the guy come. Barely. I’m dead and he’s coming,” says Monfils, laughing.

One of the requirements of being an elite player is providing your location for an hour each day as part of the anti-doping whereabouts system, which allows the anti-doping authorities to conduct unannounced out-of-competition doping tests. For years the Frenchman, like most other players, has assigned 6am as his usual hour, a time he is certain to be at home or in his hotel room.

I’m sensitive to the scents my children’s friend brings into the house. What do I do?

You can set boundaries for your health in our perfume-obsessed world – but you should be extra considerate

Hi Ugly,

I am 47 and have become sensitive to smell – particularly smells of fabric softeners and perfumes. I don’t want to be with people who apply strong scents as the smell makes me feel sick.

Why is this column called ‘Ask Ugly’?

How should I be styling my pubic hair?

How do I deal with imperfection?

My father had plastic surgery. Now he wants me and my mother to get work done

I want to ignore beauty culture. But I’ll never get anywhere if I don’t look a certain way

‘We had to kill the Wag’: nine things we learned from Victoria Beckham’s docuseries

From pissing off Donatella Versace and ‘burying her boobs in Baden-Baden’, to a curious absence of kitchenware, here’s what to expect from the pop star turned fashion designer’s new show

Two years after David Beckham and Netflix let us into the family’s sprawling Cotswolds home, offering us a glimpse into everything from his legendary football career to his OCD cleaning rituals, the Beckhams (minus Brooklyn, aside from footage of him as a baby) are back on our screens. On Thursday, the streaming giant released Victoria Beckham, a three-part series that follows the pop star turned fashion designer ahead of showing her spring/summer ‘25 at Paris fashion week. There are TikTok dances, tears, a lot of chat about mud, and one big revelation, which you can read more about here. And now for nine other things we learned from the show.

They don’t seem to own any mugs
Kitchen cabinets are usually filled with a range of questionable novelty mugs alongside the usual dinnerware, but not at the Beckham headquarters, it appears. Victoria seems to exclusively drink out of sippy cups, including glass and steel versions. She also uses a glass straw with a tiny monogrammed VB – a birthday gift from her parents that her mum, Jackie Adams, reminds her about as Victoria mixes her a gin and Coke. The only time we see Victoria sip from a traditional vessel is when she glugs a glass of red wine before the couple head to a dinner with King Charles. A pretty confident move when wearing white silk.

Gianni Infantino keeping ‘open mind’ about moving World Cups from summer

  • Fifa president says Europe too hot for July competition

  • Expansion of Club World Cup also being explored

Gianni Infantino has opened the door to further winter World Cups and Club World Cups, saying football needs to “keep an open mind” about moving major tournaments away from the summer.

Discussions are under way about the calendar for the period after 2030, which is a particular point of tension given the increased squeeze being applied by expanded competitions. Fifa has set up a working group to examine the issue, and the global governing body has given itself a headache by awarding the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia. That tournament will almost certainly be staged in winter, as Qatar 2022 was. Infantino suggested the sport should get used to untying itself from the European summer.

The non-profit helping people from all over the world to become successful game developers

The IGDA Foundation broadened its reach by attending the world’s biggest video games event this summer – but faces challenges funding its work helping underrepresented developers

Gamescom, the annual video game convention held in Cologne, Germany, is a unique event. It not only draws hundreds of thousands of players to pack out vast convention halls each year, but it also hosts professionals, offering them a chance to get their games into the hands of fans, and gives industry hopefuls a shot at passing their résumés to developers. For those based outside the US, it is the biggest event of the year by far. It is the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) Foundation’s first year here, and executive director Alyssa Walles is excited.

The IGDA Foundation provides professional development for underrepresented and marginalised people hoping to enter the video game industry, a crucial service considering the many barriers prospective producers, developers and writers face. Though Walles is fairly new to the IGDA Foundation, having joined three years ago, she is a video game industry veteran. She knows how crucial it is to help those who aren’t born into privileged situations, who can’t afford to travel across the globe to conventions, or have not had traditional schooling in computer design or coding.

‘It feels like a dream’: protests come to end as Israelis sing in ‘hostages square’

After 733 days, news of agreement greeted with celebration in Tel Aviv and stickers saying: ‘They’re coming home’

For 733 days, Israelis have come to “hostages square” in Tel Aviv with a yellow piece of tape on their shirts bearing the number of days since 251 hostages had been taken captive by Hamas-led militants. On Thursday, the yellow stickers remained but the tally was gone. In its place was a simple phrase: “They’re coming home.”

For two years, protesters had occupied the square, which faces the Israeli military headquarters, with an encampment and held rallies demanding the hostages be returned from Gaza. The area was filled with art installations, pictures of the hostages and an electronic screen counting the days and seconds that hostages had been in captivity.

‘It’s over! It’s over!’ they shout, but people here in Gaza still fear what the future may bring | Hassan Abo Qamar

Phase one of Donald Trump’s peace plan has brought joy and relief, yet it’s hard to believe this fragile peace will last

  • Hassan Abo Qamar is a young Palestinian writer, activist and storyteller based in Gaza

On Thursday morning, I didn’t wake up to the sound of explosions, but to my brother shouting: “It’s over! It’s over!” For a moment, I thought I was dreaming. I wondered: what is happening? Has another loved one been targeted? What is over? Then he told me that Donald Trump had said it. “I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan,” the president wrote on his social media. For the first day in a long time, people in Gaza woke up to news that could be called happy. The ceasefire went into effect at noon. The sound of Israeli warplanes still echoed in the sky, but, for once, they didn’t feel frightening.

The first phase of the agreement only includes the exchange of prisoners. That means 20 Israeli hostages in Gaza thought to be alive and up to 1,950 Palestinians from Gaza. Israel has arrested hundreds of us over the past two years without reason. Among them are a relative of mine, detained after Israel’s bombing of the Tel al-Sultan displacement camp earlier this year, and Dr Hossam Abu Safieh, taken from his workplace while performing humanitarian duties in Kamal Adwan hospital.

Marlon Wayans: ‘People get very violent about White Chicks’

The actor and comedian answers your questions about standup, his childhood inspirations and working with Tupac

Hi Marlon, the Scary Movie franchise is incredibly successful, building on the likes of Airplane! Were you always a fan of Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker? Sagarmatha1953
My brother Keenen took me [and other brothers] Shawn and Craig to see Airplane! when we were kids. It was an influence on my life, as was Blazing Saddles. We’re big fans of Mel Brooks. The Zucker brothers are legends – they were pioneers in the parody game. I was definitely influenced by Airplane!but I think our humour was different. We didn’t change the wheel, but we put a rim on the tyre. We have a different way of telling jokes, from how we were raised and our life experience. When it comes to parody, there are formulas you can apply. There’s a difference in how we present the jokes and what the jokes are about.

What scares you? TurangaLeela2
Death. I like life. Have you ever seen somebody in a coffin? It doesn’t look like they’re having fun. I don’t wanna be that. If I could die in the same manner of any of the Scary Movie characters, I’d choose having an orgasm. Go out like you came in.

Your new film Him is about an American football player wanting to become the Goat. Is there anything that you’re the Goat at? ShakiraOhYeah

Just trying to be the best artist I can be. Just be different. Just be Marlon. We’re a bunch of snowflakes, but each is different. You don’t find two alike. It’s the same for artists. We’re made through our experiences, our trials and tribulations. I’ve been blessed to learn how to write, produce, act, direct, do standup. I want to be like Prince, but with comedy, and one foot taller.

How was it working with Eddie Murphy on Norbit? Was he an inspiration for playing multiple roles in one film? stephenw1979
Richard Pryor in [1977 film] Which Way Is Up? was an inspiration, as was Eddie in The Nutty Professor. When I did Sextuplets, we tried to do it differently. I was in the same frame, acting with myself, and the camera was moving. Working with Eddie was a dream. He’s always been one of my idols. To do Norbit and make him laugh like I did, I’ll never forget that moment. That was the first time I thought: I could be somebody in this industry.

How ‘authenticity’ at work can become a trap for people of color

In her debut book Authentic, Jodi-Ann Burey argues the call to ‘bring your full self’ can leave people of color exposed

In the opening pages of Authentic: The Myth of Bringing Your Full Self to Work, the writer Jodi-Ann Burey issues a provocation: the commonplace injunctions to “come as you are” or “bring your full, authentic self to work” are not benevolent calls for self-expression – they’re traps. Burey’s debut book – a combination of memoir, research, cultural commentary and interviews – seeks to unmask how companies co-opt identity, shifting the burden of institutional change on to individual workers who are already vulnerable.

The impetus for the book lies partially in Burey’s own career trajectory: various roles across corporate retail, startups and in international development, filtered through her experience as a Black disabled woman. The dual posture that Burey experiences – a push and pull between asserting oneself and seeking protection – is the engine of Authentic.

The Hermes Experiment: Tree album review – vivid voices and bold textures from inventive ensemble

(Delphian)
An exhilarating album of new and reimagined works by Errollyn Wallen, Laura Moody and others reaffirms this group’s reputation for fearless musical curiosity

The third album from the Hermes Experiment again shows what a liberating force in contemporary music this ensemble have become. Beautifully thought through and rewardingly eclectic, Tree begins in a melancholy but open style with Islands by Marianne Schofield, the ensemble’s bassist, and ends with the title track by Errollyn Wallen, unfolding over a steady bass like something by Purcell.

Clarinettist Oliver Pashley and singer Héloïse Werner contribute their own songs while harpist Anne Denholm-Blair provides a subtly textured arrangement of Nicola LeFanu’s wistful song The Bourne. Schofield is also behind a gorgeous version of Les Rossignols by Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, initially halting and ethereal, then coalescing into something approaching its 17th-century original. Abel Selaocoe’s Buhle Bendalo is full of beatboxing and vocal rhapsodising that gives Werner a virtuoso workout. But the centre of gravity is perhaps Laura Moody’s three Rilke Songs, recorded here for the first time. The middle song, with Werner constantly interrupting her flow with a stuttering glitch as if there’s a fault in the playback, stands out, but the three together make for a brief cycle of enormous scope. The question is no longer why composers would choose to write for this quirky combo, it’s why they would feel their music needed anything else.

Why is the US House speaker refusing to seat an elected Democrat? | Moira Donegan

Adelita Grijalva won a landslide election for her Arizona seat. But Mike Johnson is defying the will of the voters

The people of Arizona’s seventh congressional district – a vast territory extending across the state’s south, along the Mexican border – have been denied representation in Congress for weeks. That’s because Mike Johnson, the Republican House speaker, has refused to swear in Adelita Grijalva, their representative-elect, who won a special election to fill the seat vacated by her father, the late Raúl Grijalva, in a landslide late last month. Grijalva, a Democrat, has been largely ignored by the speaker. Unlike sworn representatives, she has to go around the Capitol with an escort. There’s an office with her name on the door, but she hasn’t been allowed inside, and has worked instead out of a conference room on another floor.

It is an unprecedented abuse of procedural power on the part of the speaker, one that has had the effect of silencing a political opponent and denying representation to the citizens of her district. In refusing to seat Grijalva, Johnson has defied the will of Arizona’s voters, and effectively nullified, at least for the time being, a legitimate congressional election. He has persisted in this even in defiance of his own promises, after saying on Friday he would seat her this week once the House returned to session – and then telling lawmakers they wouldn’t reconvene this week after all. Last week, Grijalva showed up to a three-and-a-half-minute pro forma session, hoping to be sworn in then. (Johnson has sworn in other representatives at pro forma sessions in the past.) But the Republican presiding over the session, Morgan Griffith, ignored the effort. On a weekend talkshow, Grijalva said she had heard “absolutely nothing” from the speaker about the timing of her swearing in.
