Almost 400 native Australian bird and mammal species have been assessed as being at a high risk – or worse – from the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, a federal government assessment has revealed.

Some of Australia’s most beloved animals – including species of penguins, fur seals, quolls, dolphins, more than 300 birds and the Tasmanian devil – are considered at least high risk from the virus, meaning they could suffer “severe reduction in population size or viability” or worse if it reached them.

Three other ‌people were ‌wounded, said Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-installed ‌governor of the Sevastopol region. He said the attacker had been arrested. “A tragedy in Sevastopol … According to initial information, a soldier opened fire on his fellow servicemen, killing one person, before attacking civilians and killing three of them,” Razvozhayev posted. “All circumstances and causes of the ​incident are being established.” Crimea, a peninsula illegally annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014, has for weeks been the target of Ukrainian attacks aimed at disrupting Russian military logistics and cutting off the occupiers’ gasoline and electricity supplies.

Russian ballistic missiles ⁠hit Kyiv early on Wednesday, killing ⁠one ​person, injuring 12 and severely damaging buildings in several districts. Air raid alerts remained in place for ​more than an hour. The mayor, ‌Vitali Klitschko, said one warehouse building had been destroyed near the ‌city centre and rescue teams had pulled two people from the ruins. “There may still be people under the rubble.” The attack triggered ⁠an ammonia leak, which was being tackled by emergency crews.

Ukrainian drones struck warehouses across Russia including several run ⁠by online retailer Wildberries, local officials said. Wildberries said its ​warehouse near St Petersburg ‌caught fire ‌with no casualties. In the Tver ‌region, about 180km north-west of Moscow, a Wildberries facility was damaged by drones in the rural area of Emmaus. In the Moscow region, ‌a drone attack on the city of Chekhov set ​a warehouse alight and killed five people in the Novoselki industrial zone. Drones damaged a Wildberries warehouse near Krasny Bor in north-western Russia, wounding one person. A fire broke out when ​a drone ⁠fell on a distribution centre ⁠in the Leningrad region ​near ​St Petersburg operated ‌by Lenta, one ‌of the country’s largest food retailers, the company ‌said, with one person injured.

Ukraine ⁠accused Russia of committing a war ⁠crime after a ​video was released showing a drone chasing down a street vendor and exploding in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson. Police said the man in his 50s survived but suffered shock and shrapnel ⁠injuries, having dived under the vehicle for shelter. “Today, many were shocked by yet another video of the drone ‘safari’ Russians are carrying out against civilians in Kherson,” said Volodymyr ​Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s president. “We must act and support life in ways that force Russia to think seriously about peace rather than expanding ‌the range of its drones.”

Ukraine’s police and its foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, said the attack happened on Tuesday. Sybiha said the attack formed part of a deliberate Russian campaign to intimidate civilians. “This barbaric Russian war crime in Kherson demands international condemnation and justice, but thousands of similar crimes never come to the public eye.” The minister said the “sadist” pilot of the Russian drone would have known the target was a civilian.

Residential property prices in Australia’s eight capital cities have fallen by an average of 2.5% from their most recent peak in March, according to data published earlier this week by both Cotality and Proptrack. The declines have been somewhat greater in Sydney and Melbourne – 5.6% and 5.7% respectively – where they started earlier, than in other cities. Indeed, prices have not yet begun to fall in Perth, Hobart or Darwin, nor have they (on average) declined outside the capital cities.

Those falls are likely to continue, and to become more widespread, for some time yet. The major banks are predicting that capital city prices will be flat to down 5% over the course of 2026, with larger declines of between 3 and 10% in Sydney and Melbourne. Others have forecast that prices could fall by between 5 and 10% this year.

Oberon was his final work. He wrote it in London 200 years ago for Covent Garden theatre and died of tuberculosis shortly after its premiere in 1826, aged only 39. “The truth is, there’s no exact substitute for gelatine, because it has an incredibly unique texture,” says Richard Phillips, head of pastry at Timberyard in Edinburgh. Sure, there are plenty of plant-based gelling agents out there – “agar-agar [or just agar], gellan gum, pectin, carrageenan, locust bean gum, vege-gel… the list goes on,” says Phillips – but the result will never quite be the same.

“The temperature you have to use them at is different [to gelatine],” says Philip Khoury, author of Beyond Baking, so his usual workaround is to simply formulate recipes that don’t use gelling agents. Now, that’s all well and good when you’re a pastry chef, but what about the rest of us? “If, for example, I’m making a thick, pipeable cream, then I’ll use cornflour,” says Khoury, and just manipulate it to get different textures. Let’s take the panna cotta and creme brulee recipes in his first book, A New Way to Bake, as an example: “You get two very different textures from essentially the same recipe. The only difference being that if you pour the custard into a tray and chill it, it will set, whereas if you beat it with a whisk, it will turn into this luscious, creamy texture that’s just set.”

If you’re looking for something to watch with a man whose eyes brim with any mention of the second world war, this will do fine. Although essentially a manly feature about men doing man stuff in battle, with just the one lady in it (an indelible Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) for a mere slip of a framing device, it’s not unequivocally macho and actually dips its toes into the murkier waters of wartime morality. As a simple exercise in suspense, it’s certainly effective, but there are clunky passages that prevent it from being top-tier entertainment.

Scott Eastwood stars as Capt John Castle, an officer in the US army who gets stranded behind enemy lines in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. His whole squadron is killed in a skirmish with the Germans; he is left injured, equipped only with a trusty portable radio he nicknames Lassie, a faithful companion that will guide him home. Like Castle himself, the film limps a little between its big set pieces, but when they arrive they’re very well staged. One tense moment involves a kind Walloon family who hide Castle under their floorboards and then suffer dearly for their kindness. In another nail-biting bit, Castle plays possum on the ground among some slain soldiers, only to realise that the corpse beside him is not only not dead but about to give him away. The very best sequence comes near the end when Castle meets a lone American in the forest who Castle starts to suspect is not quite right given his sympathetic words about Hitler and scant knowledge of baseball.

One of the first things Ryan Murphy’s TV adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s The Shards will make you ask is: where the hell are these kids’ parents? The answer is simple. This is Los Angeles in 1981, and these fabulously benumbed kids aren’t being helicopter-parented. They’re going to parties, drinking whiskey, listening to Ultravox’s Vienna on repeat and doing copious amounts of cocaine. It’s a complete vision of Ellis’s dully hedonistic America.

The FX series follows a character named Bret Ellis – a thinly coded version of the author – in senior year at an exclusive Los Angeles prep school whose controlled, Joan Didion-coded world begins to unravel with the arrival of enigmatic transfer student Robert Mallory. At the same time, in the post-Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer era, a serial killer known as The Trawler draws ever closer to Ellis and his increasingly paranoid circle of friends. Ellis (the real one) first released his autofictional story The Shards as a serialized podcast between 2020 and 2021 before expanding it into a novel in 2023.

While the mistake apparently occurred due to an over-reliance on AI tools, it carried a painful symbolic weight for many of us. It reinforced a longstanding frustration: that too many political leaders treat Africa as a monolithic abstraction rather than a continent of 54 distinct sovereign nations.
