The shirt sellers are out en masse in the streets around Zócalo, the vast main square in Mexico City. The national team have never captured imaginations quite like this and there is almost unlimited demand for a jersey that, even before El Tri sealed a potentially epochal last-16 tie with England, had outsold every other at this World Cup. Three weeks since hosting the opening game Mexico can claim, for a few days at least, to be the tournament’s pulsating heart, and expectations are soaring. “We feel we are going to win,” says Francisco, who is walking along a buzzing Avenida 5 de Mayo. Even in a city notorious for its chaos and bustle there is an extra charge in the cool, thin air here. “It’s going to be difficult but we are all very motivated. Mexico will play a game like the previous one and they are going to beat England.”

Francisco is referring to Tuesday night’s win over Ecuador, which secured a first knockout victory since 1986. Even in the fabled, mythologised history of Estadio Azteca it was a night of almost unparalleled fervour. Then there was the situation on the streets. About 1.4 million people are estimated to have watched on outdoor screens despite a vicious pre-match storm that delayed kick-off by an hour. It is some increase on the 400,000 believed to have turned out for Mexico’s first match, a win over South Africa. Tragically it was not always safe, with four people killed in a crush and dozens trapped.

On Thursday morning, the streets around the arena were closed to traffic but open to pedestrians. A white tent was being constructed on the 31st Street side of the stadium, as a flurry of cars pulled up. Visible packaging included chicken wings from Amick Farms, large bags of ground beef and a large box from Brooklyn’s Northside Bakery. When approached by the Guardian, a gaggle of staffers with lanyards were adamant about the secrecy. “We don’t know anything!” one said.

After my adoptive father died in November last year, my adoptive siblings found a short story by Enid Blyton among his possessions. The Child Who Was Chosen was read to us as children to explain the circumstances of my adoption. It follows a nice middle-class couple whose domestic bliss is marred by childlessness, prompting them to go to a “very kind lady” who helps them to find a “chosen baby” instead. In its foreword, Blyton advises adoptive parents to tell the tale to their adopted child “again and again … so that to him ‘adoption’ means something lovely”.

The “chosen child” narrative, where parents tell adoptees they were specially picked, helped to shape the still widespread public perception of adoption as unambiguously altruistic. But it has also long been criticised by adult adoptees for masking the trauma of separation from their original parents. Reading Blyton’s saccharine story, I was struck by its glaring omissions. There is no mention of how the boy, who is unnamed until he is adopted, came to be put up for adoption; nor any suggestion that he once had another family and identity. There is no recognition of his first mother or her loss, only the loneliness of the prospective adoptive mother. The woman from the adoption agency also tells the couple that if this child isn’t the one they really want, she will find another one – as though she’s running a baby market.

Ask almost anyone on the women’s tour who has the best backhand and most will say Amanda Anisimova. Ask them who the best server is and the American is not usually top of the list. On Thursday, though, she did her best impression of Serena Williams as she hit 20 aces to scrape past Sofia Kenin and claim a place in the third round.

With every win, Anisimova erases some of the memory of last year’s final, when she was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Iga Swiatek. But for a while early in the third set, when she trailed the former Australian Open champion 3-1, it looked like she wouldn’t make it. But when she needed it most, her serve came good. Nine of her 20 aces came in that deciding set and her serve got her out of a big hole.

At its most outrageous, CrazySexyCool seems to be testing the tensile strength of the jukebox musical itself.

Then again, this is TLC. The truth was outrageous. And that makes for a busy, dizzying, detail-minded show. Throughout the various dramas unfolding onstage, the musical’s three leads – Holli’ Gabrielle Conway as T-Boz, Jade Milan as Left Eye, Stoney B Woods as Chilli – exude a poise that feels as cool and congenial as the real TLC did when they ruled the radio three decades ago. At a weeknight performance of CrazySexyCool in late June, audience members seemed as if they had been reunited with old friends, singing, laughing, shouting affirmations and dancing in their seats.
